Mike Miller’s heavyweight title run was the big story for Sumter at the Hardee’s Blue Devil Invitational at Dreher.
Miller was one of three Gamecocks to advance to the championship finals, but was the only one to come away with a gold medal. Teammates Shawn Armstrong and Josh Sullivan had to settle for a second-place silver award.
Miller beat Bluffton’s Phillip Scott in double overtime in the last bout of the two-day event for his first tournament title of the year. He finished third at the Lugoff-Elgin tourney just prior to the Christmas break.
Armstrong suffered his first loss of the season in the 189 final to Caleb Desjardins of Myrtle Beach, who is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. Sullivan was felled in the 145 final by Blythewood’s Keith Harding.
Four other Gamecocks placed – Matt Devine was fourth at 130, Ross Watson shared third place at 135, Andrew Lovice was fourth at 140 and Trevor Jahnke was fourth at 215.
