Hope's title tops Chapin show at BDI

Stuart Hope’s championship performance at 103 pounds highlighted a strong performance by the Chapin Eagles at the Hardee’s Blue Devil Invitational tournament at Dreher.

Hope was one of six Eagles to place at the 27-team event, but the only one to strike gold. Hope, a sophomore, defeated Chesterfield’s Tyler Alley in the title bout. Alley came into the competition ranked No. 1 at the weight in Class 2A-1A by scamt.com. Hope is unranked in 3A.

Chapin, ranked sixth in 3A, finished in third place behind defending Class 1A state champion Chesterfield and third-ranked (3A) Bluffton with 173.50 points.

Nate Polly and Emerson Shaw joined Hope in the championship finals, but had to settle for silver medals. Polly, a sophomore transfer from Lexington, fell to two-time defending state champion Ian Harper of Chesterfield at 125. Entering the BDI, Harper was ranked No. 1 at 119, while Polly stood at No. 2 at 135, based on December performances. Shaw was felled by top-ranked Tyler Roselieb of Bluffton in the 160 finale.

Otherwise, Barrett Owens tied for third place at 119 with Blythewood’s Shawn Day, Chase Owens shared third place at 135 with Ross Watson of Sumter and Nick Wohlers finished fourth at heavyweight.
