Sumter and Wilson Hall finally get down to business tonight when the neighboring schools open play in their respective basketball regions.
Sumter’s boys and girls host South Florence in the first round of Region 6-4A play. The Barons two Top 10 teams host Orangeburg Prep in the SCISA Region 3-3A opener.
The Gamecocks boys and girls enter region play off impressive wins over archrival Crestwood on Saturday night. The Sumter boys (7-3) averaged a previous 51-50 loss to the Knights with a rousing 51-38 triumph in the rematch. Quinn McClendon fired in 22 poingts, 14 coming in the second half, and blocked three shots to lead the way. The Sumter girls (5-5) also avenged a prior loss to Crestwood with a 57-51 overtime success. Brittany Starling led the Gamecocks with 17 points, while teammates Shanice Cooper and Kashia Bracey chipped in 11 points apiece.
Wilson Hall’s girls team stands at 10-1, losing only to Irmo, a Class 4A public school, at the Highlander Classic at Heathwood Hall during the Christmas break. The Barons are ranked No. 2 in the latest SCISA 3A polls behind Ashley Hall, which also lost to Irmo - in the HH tournament championship game. Wilson Hall tuned up for the region opener by downing Northwood Academy 44-33 last week. Kendall Painter had 13 points and 13 rebounds in a starring role.
The Barons boys team (8-3) is ranked No. 6 in the boys SCISA 3A poll. WH bounced back from a loss to Heathwood Hall on Jan. 2 to whip up on Northwood 58-32 last week. Wesley Talley had team scoring honors vs. the Chargers with 12 points.
