SCISA 2-3A hoops: Heathwood boys, girls keep first-place billing

Heathwood Hall’s boys and girls basketball teams improved to 3-0 in SCISA Region 2-3A play with wins Friday in Greenville against St. Joesph’s.

The Highlander boys (14-4, 3-0) beat the host Knights 50-32 to maintain sole possession of first place in the region race. Corey Littlejohn led the Highlanders with 14 points, and Mac Whalen chipped in 12. Littlejohn is averaging 19 points a game in region play.

Heathwood’s girls team (8-9, 3-0) escaped with a 40-38 win to set up a first-down clash with Augusta Christian on Tuesday at home. Arayael Brandner tallied 16 points and Kristen Dickerson added 14 for the Highlanders. Dickerson is averaging 16 points a game in region play to date, while Brandner is at 12.3 ppg.

In other action, Ben Lippen pulled off a sweep of Hammond, and Cardinal Newman’s boys downed Augusta Christian 54-31 to salvage a doubleheader split.

Andre Henning scored 18 points, Mick Shoemaker rang up a season-high 17 and Mitchell Deter tallied 15 as Ben Lippen beat Hammond 67-57 to improve to 9-8 overall, 2-1 in the region. Shoemaker came into the game averaging 2.8 ppg. Aaron Walter shared game scoring honors with Hennie at 18 points, and received double-digit scoring support from A.D. Briggs (12) and Taylor Smith (10).

The Falcons girls team (5-10 overall) scored its first region success with a 49-35 win over the Skyhawks. Elizabeth Hodges led Ben Lippen with 19 points, Mani Keita deposited 15 and Emma Cummings chipped in 10. Kaki Smith scored 19 points for Hammond.

Cardinal Newman’s boys (11-5 overall) had little trouble dispatching Augusta Christian, 54-31, as Jake Motto pumped in 19 points. The Cardinals girls fell 54-45 in the opener as Elizabeth Alewine erupted for 27 points for the visiting Lions. Molly Rainwater led CN with 13 points, and Alex Augusta contributed 10. It was the first region loss for the Cards.
