Carolina Forest hands Sumter boys first 6-4A setback

Carolina Forest handed Sumter its first Region 6-4A boys basketball loss on Wednesday, 42-36.

The Panthers from Myrtle Beach (12-6, 3-0) now share the top spot in the standings with Hartsville, which also improved to 3-0 in conference play on Wednesday with a 73-44 rout of South Florence. The Gamecocks fell to 2-1 in the region, 9-5 overall.

Sumter came out flat, scoring just 13 points in the first half. Carolina Forest built a 22-13 edge at the break and held on for the key win. Mike Gray’s 16 points led CF. Gray canned five 2-pointers in the game. Khalil Malone paced the Gamecocks with 11 points and team scoring leader Quinn McLendon added 10.

Sumter is back in action Friday at home against Hartsville.
