5-4A girls: Dutch Fork lead now at two full games

Dutch Fork saw its Region 5-4A girls basketball lead expand to two full games on Friday. The Silver Foxes ran their region record to 7-0 with a 55-48 win over North Augusta. Meanwhile, Irmo fell back to third place tie in the wake of their second heartbreaking loss to Orangeburg-Wilkinson, this time in OT.

Senior Devin Pearson and eighth-grader Alaina Coates power Dutch Fork’s win by scoring 19 and 14 points, respectively. Pearson is leading the team with a 12.9 region scoring average, while Coates is at 11.6 ppg.

The Silver Foxes have won five in a row and nine of their last 10 games to run their overall record to 11-3.

Irmo just can buy a break against O-W. The Yellow Jackets missed a last-second shot in a 51-50 loss at home in the region opener on Dec. 16. Last night in Orangeburg, Irmo missed three shots at victory in the final 12 seconds in regulation, and ended up losing 48-42 in extra time.

O-W moved into second place at 6-2, one half game ahead of the Yellow Jackets (5-2).

Brooke McCants had 17 points and Brianna Stanton scored 11 for Irmo.

White Knoll, fresh from a win over Lexington on Friday, humbled winless Richland Northeast 52-27 on Friday as Emily Kirby took game scoring honors with 18 points. Ashley Thompson and Jessica Blakenship backed Kirby with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
