Dutch Fork travels to Orangeburg-Wilkinson for a key Region 5-4A girls basketball game. The Silver Foxes of coach Faye Norris currently rules the roost with a 7-0 region record, while the host Bruins moved into second place at 6-2 in the wake of a 48-42 overtime win against Irmo on Friday.
Dutch Fork (11-3 overall) beat O-W by a convincing 53-37 margin in the first-half meeting of the teams on Dec. 16. Tuesday’s game is the start of a busy and important week for the Silver Foxes, who play at White Knoll on Friday and take on Irmo Saturday at home in a make-up game.
The Silver Foxes tuned up for the rematch with a 55-45 win over North Augusta on Friday. Devin Pearson tallied 19 points to lead the way, and Aliana Coates had a big night, as well, with a double-double – 14 points, 12 rebounds. Donesha Shuler chipped in seven points, seven boards and five steals.
Pearson is averaging 13.1 points and 4.2 assists for DF, while Coates checks in at 12.3 ppg and 9.9 rpg with 45 blocks. Shyiana Oakman, who has missed the last two games is averaging 10.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.4 blocks a game. Shuler is averaging 7.9 points and 4.8 rebounds and shares the team steals lead with Erin Houston at 33.
Balance is the name of the game for the Bruins. Erika Sumpter is the nominal scoring leader at 10.7 ppg, followed by Shawanda Hangton at 10.1. Four other O-W regulars are averaging between 6-4 and 6.8 points a game. Sumpter is also the top rebounder at 7.2 rpg. Daiveena Kemp is averaging 7.2 assists a game.
