West Florence shocked Sumter 52-44 in Region 6-4A boys basketball action on Friday. The host Knight went on a 14-5 run early in the fourth quarter to doom the cold-shooting Gamecocks.
The Knights, who scored just 22 points in a Saturday region loss to Conway, received almost as many points (17) from Jonathon Gardner in the upset win. West Florence improved to 2-3 in region play, 6-11 overall.
Quinn McClendon led Sumter with 17 points. The Gamecocks fell to 10-6, 3-2, and now trailed Hartsville and Carolina Forest in the region standings. Hartsville, which dropped a 62-53 decision to Sumter on Friday for its first region loss, handed CF its first region setback on Tuesday, 91-66.
The Sumter girls upped their region mark to 3-2 with a 66-45 success in Tuesday opener. Shanice Cooper topped the Gamecocks (8-8 overall) with 13 points. Like the boys, Sumter’s girls trailed front-running Hartsville and Carolina Forest by one game in the region standings.
