5-3A: Dreher girls thump Airport, gain share of region lead

Dreher decisively knocked off Airport 49-29 on Tuesday to create a three-way tie at the top of the Region 5-3A girls basketball standings at the close of the first half of the conference campaign.

Shaquina Smith led the Blue Devils with 17 points and Tequila McNeal added 14. Dreher did an excellent defensive job on Airport’s leading scorer Jessica Ellison, who finished with just five points.

Brookland-Cayce responded well to Friday’s loss to Airport, downing Midland Valley 53-41 to join Dreher and Airport in the jam at the top. Asia Benn was the B-C headliner with 21 points.

On the boys side, Dreher closed the first half with a 54-49 win vs. Airport and perfect 5-0 record. The B-C fell 42-41 to Midland Valley to fall to 0-5.

Quayshaun Hawkins led the Dreher scoring parade with 17 points, and had nice support from Dominic Boyd (15 points) and James Whitehead (10).

O”Neal Jones tallied 17 points for B-C in a losing effort.
