Fairfield Central’s boys and Lower Richland’s girls carry 5-0 records into the start of second half play in Region 4-3A basketball on Friday.
The Griffins from Winnsboro (15-3) enter Friday’s home date with Chester ranked No. 2 in Class 3A behind Daniel. FC is on a roll – winning 10 in a row and 13 of its last 14 games after getting off to a 2-2 start. Fairfield topped the Cyclones 77-68 in the first meeting as Anthony Craig and Kendrick Anderson both scored 17 points. Anderson led FC in region scoring at 17.8 ppg, followed by Marquise Robinson (13.8 ppg) and Craig (10.4 ppg).
The Diamond Hornets, 16-1 and ranked No. 1 in 3A and coming off two big region wins against Chester and Chapin, hosts A.C. Flora on Friday. LR crushed the Falcons 68-23 in the first meeting on Jan. 9, but Flora should be tougher in the rematch because senior all-state guard Tiara Knotts finally returned to action on Friday in a 60-43 win over Chester. Knotts scored 13 points in her 2008-09 debut.
Morgan Stroman leads LR with a 17.0 scoring averaging in region games, and Jasmine Harrison is next at 10.5 ppg. The return of Knotts takes some of the production heat off Kim Roach and Jasmine Stubbs.
The fifth-ranked Lower Richland boys (15-4, 4-1) take on improving A.C. Flora (6-14, 3-2) in the nightcap. The Diamond Hornets have won four in a row and 10 of their last 11 outings. Senior Preston Blackmon is the key LR operative. The Falcons are riding a three-game region winning streak. Kvahn Pennix (17.8 ppg), Marquise Simuel (11.0 ppg) and Akeem Williams (9.2 ppg) have been the big guns for Flora in region play.
