Fairfield Central and Lower Richland are co-champions in Region 4-4A baskteball, but the Griffins from Winnsboro will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 3A state playoffs.
FC (19-4, 9-1) bagged the top region seed by beating Chapin 75-64 on Thursday. Anthony Craig paced the Griffins with 21 points and Marquis Robinson chipped in 12. Lower Richland (20-4, 9-1) gained a share of the title by downing Chester 65-56. The tie-breaking difference was FC’s win over the Diamond Hornets by a 20-point margin. LR beat the Griffins in the rematch by 15 points.
There were a three-way tie for second-place in the girls division, but no special tie-breaking games are required to sort out the seeds behind mighty Lower Richland. Chapin (18-6, 6-4) in the No. 2 seed, A.C. Flora (14-9, 6-4) is No. 3 and Chester (17-5, 6-4) is the No. 4 seed.
Chapin earned a home date in the first round of the playoffs, which begin Feb. 17, with a 53-42 win at Fairfield Central on Thursday. Ashlee Wilson fired in 18 points for the Eagles, and Amy Lepper contributed 14 to the cause.
A.C. Flora topped Lugoff-Elgin 60-38 behind Kim Roach (20 points) and Tiara Knotts (16).
There is one play-in game tonight, thanks to a 65-61 win by Lugoff-Elgin over A.C. Flora. The win allowed the Demons (11-12, 3-7) to move into a fourth-place tie with the Falcons (6-19, 3-7). The last remaining playoff invitation will go to the winner of tonight’s rematch at Fairfield Central.
