SCISA girls: Cardinals only Midlands club to advance

Cardinal Newman, Heathwood Hall and Hammond finished in a three-way tie for second place in SCISA Region 2-3A, but only the Cardinals survived first-round, state-tournament testing on Friday night.

Cardinal Newman (13-9) dispatched Porter-Gaud 62-44 in a preliminary round game at Heathwood Hall. Molly Rainwater paced the Cards with 20 points, while Tori August and Alex August added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

CN takes on 26-4 Orangeburg Prep in the quarterfinals on Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) at the Sumter County Exhibition Center.

Heathwood Hall and Hammond were not so fortunate on Friday at Pinewood Prep. The Highlanders dropped a 39-37 heartbreaker to Northwood Academy, while Hammond was send packing by reigning SCISA champion Hilton Head Prep, 59-40.

Kristen Dickerson scored 19 and Arayael Brandner added 14 but it was not enough to keep the defending state runner-up Highlanders from ending a disappointing season with a 12-15 record. Georgia Theodore scored 13 points and Kaki Smith tallied 10 for the Skyhawks, who closed at 9-15.
