Shawn White and James Bethel will represent Richland Northeast at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament this weekend at Lexington.
White (29-5) made the cut for the third time by claiming the consolation championship at 140 pounds at the Lower State qualifying meet on Saturday at Fort Dorchester. White is looking to become a place finisher for the first time in his final prep outing. Bethel (31-5) made the state cut for the first time in his senior year by finishing second to Sumter’s Josh Sullivan.
White draws Dorman senior Kirby Tate, a first-time qualifier, in the first round. Bethel goes up against Jonathan Miskelly, a sophomore first-time qualifier from Fort Mill.
Michael Trapp and Robert Bookman just missed the cut, losing in the consolation semifinals at the Lower State qualifier. Trapp finished with a 18-10 record at 152, while Bookman closed at 34-12 at 215.
The Cavaliers have never produced a state champion, and only two state finalists along the way – Tran Phillips at 130 in 1998 and Lee Ireton at heavyweight in 1991.
