White Knoll’s presence at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament this weekend at Lexington is limited to just two entries – seniors Skylar Walker and Brandon Proveaux, who both made the cut with fourth-place finishes at last week’s Lower State qualifying meet at Fort Dorchester.
Shane Lee, Chad Lee and Phillip Austin all saw their state hopes go by the boards with losses in the Lower State consolation semifinals. Shane Lee was a state consolation champion last season at 125, but came up short in 135 qualifying this time around.
Neither Walker (35-15) nor Proveaux (35-5) have experience state tournament success. Walker was 0-2 in his state debut last season at 135 pounds. He opens at 130 on Friday against Upper State champion and two-time state qualifier Michael Hellman of Greenwood. Proveaux, who went 0-2 at state in 2007 and 2008, takes on Upper State champion Patrick Thompson of South Pointe in a 215 first-round match on Friday.
One reason for White Knoll’s disappointing showing at the Lower State meet was a wave of sickness that swept through the room last week.
