Dutch Fork enters five at 4A state wrestling tournament

Five Dutch Fork wrestlers have qualified for the Class 4A state tournament this weekend at Lexington, including defending state champion George Holstead at 135 pounds.

Holstead, however, enters the state individual finals on the heals of his second loss to the season. The Silver Foxes star faltered against Fort Dorchester’s Michael Young in the finals of the Lower State qualifying meet last week at Fort Dorchester. Holstead beat Young in the state semifinals last year at 130 before downing Summerville’s Eli Ashby in overtime to bag the 27th state gold medal in program history. Holstead opens against T.L. Hanna’s Elliott Dobbs in first-round action on Friday.

The other DF reps are senior Corey Koon (189), junior Marshall Williams (285), senior T.J. Cayruth (215) and junior John Brannigan (125).

Koon and Williams were the Silver Foxes Lower State champions. Koon, 35-4 and a first-time state qualifier, draws Hunter Smith of Laurens in the first round. Williams, 36-2 and also a first-time qualifier, is matched up against Blythewood’s Joey Starnes in the opener. Cayruth (36-3) and Brannigan (32-8) emerged as consolation champions at Lower State. Cayruth, a three-time state qualifier who is looking for his first place finish, takes on Rock Hill’s Rueben Valdez in the first round. Brannigan, who made the cut last season but did not place, opens against Maudin’s Dylan Kerr, who was the state consolation champ at 119 last year.
