Airport's Stevenson, Phillips place, but neither make it to finals

Airport’s Josh Stevenson and Chris Phillips both placed at the Class 3A state tournament., but neither Eagle standout made it to the championship finals. Airport has not had a state finalist since 1994.

Stevenson, who finished fourth at 145 pounds last season, went 2-2 and placed fourth at 152 at last weekend’s event at Lexington. Stevenson, who was ranked No. 2 by scmat.com, finished with a 26-6 senior season record.

Phillips, a junior who closed with a 40-3 record, came back from a semifinal loss to eventual champion Kyle Smith of Riverside, to go 2-0 in the consolation bracket to earn the bronze medal. He beat Eastside’s Garrett Jones 7-3 in the third-place match. Phillips qualified but did not place at state in 2008.

Jamie Sires and Matt Ulmer both qualified, but Ulmer had to forfeit at 135. Sires went 1-2 at 125, losing his shot at a place finish to Battery Creek’s Bobby Whitman in the consolation semifinals. Sires finished with a 19-7 record, Ulmer at 20-10.
