The South Carolina High School League has ruled that Camden senior wrestler Horus Madrid is officially a co-champion at 130 pounds in Class 3A this season.
Madrid had a 7-6 win over Matt Jones of Travelers Rest in the 135 title bout taken away by a referee ruling 10 minutes after the result was reported to the official scorer’s table. That decision, based on an interpretation of the “injury time” rule, resulted in 45 seconds being placed back on the clock. Jones tied up the match and eventually won in overtime, much to the dismay of Madrid, Camden coach Stephen Sutusky and Bulldogs fans in attendance.
But the edict that came down from the HSL means both outcomes are void. Madrid and Jones are now the first men in state history to share a weight class state championship.
For the record, Madrid’s revised senior-season mark is 39-1-1.
