Blazers top Griffins in softball opener

In the 2009 season opener for the Ridge View Lady Blazers, they got things off to a good start as they hosted the Fairfield Central Griffins from Winnsboro. This was a fan-friendly game where the weather felt more like a late-season April game, rather than the normal arctic chill of a season opener in March.

The visitors from Fairfield opened the scoring in the top of the first off Ridge View starter Brooke Dimock, scoring a run after a leadoff single to right by S. Wright. Wright stole second and moved to third when the throw got past the shortstop covering second, scoring on a groundout to 2nd later in the inning. Fairfield tacked on two more in the 3rd to go up 3-0 over the Blazers. J. Martin reached on a groundball error to 2nd, and moved to 3rd on leadoff hitter Wright's second hit of the game. Some indecision on a grounder back to the pitcher allowed K. Spearman to reach on a fielder's choice, while Martin beat the throw home. Wright, after her second stolen base of the game, would later score on a groundout to 3rd.

The Blazers answered back in the home half of the inning however, scoring 4 to go up 4-3. Blazer DP Katherine Stori started the inning by getting plunked with a pitch, followed by a left-handed bunt single down third from leadoff hitter Megan Woodall. LF Stephanie Junker reached after becoming the 2nd hit batter of the inning, loading the bases for the Blazers without a ball out of the infield. After an infield popup for the first out, 3B Kaitlyn Smith delivered an rbi single between 1st and 2nd, with Woodall also scoring on the play when the throw from right sailed over the catcher. Blazer catcher Kaitlyn McCormick then scored Junker with an rbi-grounder to short, reaching safely when the throw was underthrown to first, while Smith also scored from 2nd on the miscue.

The Blazers increased their lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the 4th inning, when 2B Megan Woodall scored on an infield groundout after tripling over the right fielder's head with one out in the inning. Ridge View manufactured an insurance run in the 6th when senior Shatoya White singled to left to start the inning, scoring on 2 wild pitches and a passed ball.

Fairfield Central made things a little closer in the 7th, picking up a run on singles by A. Copeland and Wright, to make the final score 6-4. Ridge View pitcher Brooke Dimock collected her first win of the season, showing increased velocity, striking out 14 while not walking a batter.
