The young Gilbert boys basketball team learned some hard lessons in the 2008-09 season, going 4-19 overall, 1-9 in Region 3-2A. But Indians coach Stewart Kennerly believes things will be better next season with a veteran core expected to return.
“We were young with only one senior, Mark Robinson,” said Kinnerly. “The staring line up generally consisted of Mark, juniors Michael Robinson and Johnny Bowers, freshman Miki Morrison and sophomore Luke Shumpert. Junior Matt Stegall and sophomore Cole Jennings improved greatly during the season. Juniors Demetrius Haltiwanger and Ben Watkins also showed some promise. With hard work in the off-season, the team should be much improved next year.”
Robinson was the Gilbert standout, earning all-region recognition. He averaged 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists a game.
