Hammond off to 6-0 tennis start under new coach

Hammond’s young boys tennis team, under the guidance of famed Midlands teaching professional Bernie McGuire, is off to a 6-0 start this spring, including a 5-0 run in the first half of the SCISA Region 2-3A campaign.

The Skyhawks open the second half of the conference schedule Friday at home against St. Joseph’s.

Hammond’s lineup features freshman Ben Horst at No. 1 singles, sophomore Ira Usry at No. 2 singles, seventh-grader Bill Horst at No. 3 singles, sophomore Ted Lydon at No. 4 singles, sophomore Will Besley at No. 5 singles and sophomore William Greenberg at No. 6 singles.

Ben Horst, Bill Horst and Besley are all 6-0 in singles outings to date, while Lyndon and Greenberg are both 5-1. Usry has split his six singles outings.

McGuire has employed 14 players in nine different pairings in doubles so far. The most successful doubles teams have been Ben and Bill Horst (3-0), Usry and Besley (3-0), Ellis and Miles Reese (3-1), Cliff and Albert Kitchens (2-0) and Greenberg and Lyndon (2-0).
