Ridge View nips Rock Hill in 4-4A softball opener

The Ridge View Blazers hosted the Rock Hill Bearcats in the Region 4-4A softball opener for both teams on Tuesday, 3/17/09. Both teams entered the game with a 2-0 overall record. Solid pitching and defense was the standard for both teams through most of this contest, with the Blazers scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to win 2-1.

Both pitchers, Brooke Dimock (Ridge View) and M. Brazzell (Rock Hill) sailed through the first 3 innings, with each only allowing a single hit. In the top of the 4th, however, the Bearcats mounted a legitimate threat. Rock Hill 1B B. Craig lead off the inning with a single past first into right, followed by RF B. Neely reaching on an infield error at 1st. A. Browning then looped a ball into right for a single to load the bases with no outs. The Blazers brought the infield defense in for the play at the plate. Rock Hill pitcher M. Brazzell then grounded a ball to Blazer 2B Megan Woodall, who threw home for the force at the plate for the first out, with C Katelyn Smith making a nice play digging a low throw. This set up the defensive play of the game for the Blazers. With one out and bases still loaded, J. Byers lofted a fly to right where Blazer RF Shatoya White made the catch for the 2nd out, threw a strike to the plate where Smith swept the tag and nailed Neely for the 3rd out, who was attempting to tag and score on the play.

The Bearcats returned the favor in the bottom of the inning when SS M. Brazzell threw out Katelyn Smith at the plate attempting to score on a grounder with one out. The Bearcats broke the ice in the top of the 5th when A. Bragg lead off the inning with an infield hit to the right side, moved to 2nd on a passed ball, tagged to 3rd on a fly to center, and scored on a 1-out grounder to 3rd, putting the Bearcats in the lead 1-0. The Blazers would retake the lead in the bottom of the 6th when the Bearcat pitcher ran into some control trouble, after only allowing one walk through the first 5 innings. The Blazers used 3 walks, an infield error at 1st, two wild pitches and a passed ball, allowing Stephanie Junker and Tre Medlin to score a pair without benefit of a hit, putting the Blazers up 2-1 going into the 7th inning.

Blazer pitcher Brooke Dimock closed the door in the 7th with a 1-2-3 inning to collect her 3rd win of the season. Though Dimock did not record a strikeout in the game, she used location to utilize a solid Blazer defense that recorded 13 groundball putouts on the night. Next up for the Blazers will be hosting Sumter on Wednesday at 7:30 in a non-region game.
