Spring Valley, Hammond keep rolling on the courts

Spring Valley and Hammond extended their early-season winning streaks on Friday.

Spring Valley, 6-0 and ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, downed A.C. Flora 6-1 in a non-region match. Brent Lett was the winner at No. 1 singles in the Vikings’ reworked lineup, followed by Conner Burke (No. 2), Trey Finch (No. 4) and Nick Nichnic (No. 5). Burke improved to 6-0 individually, Lett to 5-0, Nichnic to 3-0. Finch, usually emplayed in doubles, got a win in his first singles outing of the season. Of note, Hampton Drake suffered a loss to Flora’s Ross Fuller. It was the first setback suffered by any individual Viking to date. Joe Cunningham improved to 5-0 in doubles, this time teaming up with Andrew Thomas.

Hammond upped its season record to 7-0 with a 9-0 shutout of St. Joseph’s in a SCISA Region 2-3A rematch. The Skyhawks opened the season with a 7-2 win over the Greenville-based squad.

Ben Horst, Ira Usry, Bill Horst, Ted Lydon, Will Besley and William Greenberg swept the singles matches. The Horst brothers, whom are both 7-0 in singles play, also improved to 6-0 in doubles. Besley and Greenberg also stand at 7-0 in singles, Lydon is 6-1 and Usry is 5-2. Besley and Usry improved to 3-1 as a doubles team. Ellis and Miles Reese combined for a doubles win vs. St. Joe’s, and boast a 6-0 record in tandem.
