CHAPIN - The Eagles, at last, are through with the most demanding portion of its regular-season schedule. Chapin, 1-4 but still ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, opens Region 4-3A play Friday at Lugoff-Elgin, weather permitting … Dick Hiller’s team dropped a tough 2-1 shootout decision to vastly improved Ridge View on Tuesday for its fourth straight setback. The previous losses came against district rival Dutch Fork and 4A powerhouses Irmo and Northwestern.

A.C. FLORA - The Falcons are off to a somewhat deceiving 4-3 start. Two of the setbacks to date have been 1-0 affairs against Brookland-Cayce and Hammond … ACF is off until Tuesday’s Region 4-3A opener at Chapin … Of note, Daniel Weldon took care of the scoring in a 1-0 win over 4A Blythewood in the season opener at the weather-shortened Sandhills Classic preseason tournament, Alex Francis tallied two goals in a 3-1 win vs. Ben Lippen and Cameron Wegryzn had the hat trick in a 4-1 conquest of Covenant Central … Wegryzn leads the team with four goals.

BROOKLAND-CAYCE - The Bearcats have been the busiest 3A team in the Midlands so far, sporting a 4-2-2 record. B-C, which is ranked No. 9 in the most recent coaches poll, bounced back from a tough, 1-0 Region 5-3A loss to South Aiken with a 1-0 victory on Tuesday against Dreher. The Bearcats are 2-1 in region matters … Junior keeper Chris Duzan had four shutouts … Greg Stone’s first goal of the season was all Durzan and the B-C defense needed against Dreher in the 40th meeting of the teams in one of the longest standing rivalries in the Midlands. The series began in 1973-74 winter season … Taylor Lewis leads the team with six goals, but nine other Bearcats have tallied single goals. Lewis had a hat trick in an 8-0 win over Swansea in the region opener on March 17 … B-C is scheduled to play at Sumter on Thursday, meets Clinton at Presbyterian College on Saturday and returns to the region wars on Monday against archrival Airport at The Cage.

DREHER - The Blue Devils finally got on the right side with a 2-1 shootout triumph against Lugoff-Elgin on Wednesday, snapping a six-game losing streak … Dreher’s loaded early schedule included dates against Northwestern, the No. 1 team in the nation (according to ESPN), 4A Ridge View and SCISA power Cardinal Newman … Collin Glass filled the starring role vs. L-E, scoring the Blue Devils goal in regular time, converting the decisive penalty kick in the shootout and making two saves in goal in the shootout session … Glass, Justin Parker and Byron Quinatoa share the team scoring lead with three goals apiece. Parker and Quinatoa both scored two goals in a wild 6-5 overtime loss to vastly improved Ridge View in the regular season opener.
