Run-scoring hits by Emily Whetsel and Mogan Mixon in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Sumter to a dramatic 2-1 Region 6-4A softball win Friday against Hartsville.
The verdict allowed the Gamecocks to keep pace with South Florence at the top of the region standings at 4-1, while Hartsville, which recently handed South Florence its first region loss in years, dropped back to third place at 3-2.
Whetsel’s single plated Kaila Wrighten, who reached on an error, with the equalizer. After Erin Cook drew a four-pitch walk, Mixon ripped the first pitch she saw to score Anna Ortman to end the game.
Sumter ace sophomore pitcher Sutton Watson fired a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts, and only had trouble in the top of the sixth inning when Hartsville got its only run on two hits – one being a RBI triple. Otherwise, Watson was in command. She struck out the side three times.
