Bernie McGuire’s Hammond boys tennis team enters the regular-season stretch run at 10-0. The Skyhawks kept their perfect season in tact was winning three matches last week while most of the Midlands tennis lineup was off on spring break.
The Skyhawks defeated SCISA Region 2-3A foes Cardinal Newman (9-0) and Heathwood Hall (6-3) and stepped out of the region to hand Wilson Hall a 6-3 defeat with a revised starting lineup.
Heathwood Hall has been Hammond’s toughest foe to date. Both matches have come down to 6-3 results. The Highlanders highlight in the two outings is a sweep at No. 2 singles by Marshall Sanford.
Ben Horst, Bill Horst and Ted Lyndon had the most productive individual weeks for the Skyhawks. Ben Horst went 3-0 to run his season record at No. 1 singles to 10-0. Bill Horst was 2-0 at No. 3 singles, and won once at No. 2 singles to improve to 10-0 in singles play. The Horst brothers teamed up for on doubles win last week, and are 6-0 at No. 1 doubles on the season. Lyndon also had a 3-0 singles week – winning twice at his regular No. 4 spot, once at No. 3. He also teamed up with Kyle Ladrech for a win at No. 2 doubles, and went 1-1 with – one win at No. 3 and one loss at No. 2. Lyndon is 9-1 in singles play, 4-1 in doubles.
In other record updates, Will Besley is 9-1 in singles, 4-1 in doubles, and Greenberg now stands at 8-2 in singles, 3-1 in doubles.
Hammond has three matches left in the regular season – at home against Ben Lippen (April 14) and Pinewood Prep (April 16) and at Augusta Christian (April 21).
