Notebook: 5-4A softball

The Region 5-4A softball season resumes Tuesday, weather permitting. With two weeks to go in the regular season, Lexington leads the way with a 6-0 region record, followed by White Knoll (7-1) and North Augusta (6-2).

It should be an interesting stretch run for the pennant. Lexington still has two games left with White Knoll and one with North Augusta. White Knoll and North Augusta have split their two confrontations.

LEXINGTON – After missing the playoffs for the first time in memory a year ago, the young, motivated Wildcats have turned things around this season. Lexington, 15-3 overall and ranked No. 7 in Class 4A, has made a dramatic improvement offensively this spring. The Wildcats sport a .311 team batting average and are averaging seven runs a game … Sophomore shortstop Lindsay Gore has been on fire all season with a .459 batting average, a 1.001 OPS, four doubles, 10 runs and seven RBIs. Freshman Brittany Carr is hitting .431 with an eye-opening .724 slugging percentage, four doubles, two triples, three home runs, 22 runs scored and 15 RBIs. Sophomore Kayley Wilson is at .364 with 13 runs and 10 RBIs. Senior Emily Caughman is hitting .316 with 13 runs, two triples and seven RBIs … Lexington still has eight games left on the schedule, including a doubleheader tonight against Orangeburg-Wilkinson, and a Thursday trip to Irmo. The Wildcats’ makeup game with Richland Northeast on Monday was washed out and will have to be fit in at some point.

WHITE KNOLL – After winning 11 of 13 out of the starting gate, the ninth-ranked Timberwolves have run into some problems of late against stiff competition. WK dropped a a 1-0 region decision to North Augusta on April 3 and went 2-3 at the elite Azalea Invitational Tournament in Summerville, losing to Unico TN 2-1, North Augusta 6-1 and top-ranked Stratford 5-0 … The Timberwolves managed only 11 hits in the four April losses, and were guilty of eight errors in the three AIT setbacks … Sara Eisenhower, Nicole Stancil, Kali Bishop, Codee Yeske and Brittany Williamson have carried the WK attack. Eisenhower in batting (.339) and RBIs (17) and has scored 15 runs. Stancil is hitting .326, and leads the team with a .429 on-base percentage. Bishop is batting .308 with 15 runs and eight RBIs. Yeske, plagued by injuries this season, is batting .320 with two home runs and nine RBI in only 25 official at bats. Williamson is hitting .286 and leads the team with 19 runs scored … The Timberwolves pitching has been outstanding. Shelley Jeffcoat is 9-4 with a 0.66 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 84 innings. Kaylin White is 4-2 with a 1.48 ERA and 40 whiffs in 33 innings in the circle … WK’s game with 3A power Brookland-Cayce on Monday was washed out. The Timberwolves are slated to return to region action tonight at home vs. Dutch Fork, and travel to Aiken on Thursday.

IRMO – The Yellow Jackets (7-10, 4-3) have the inside track to a fourth-place finish, at the very least. But Irmo have a shot to moving up if it can finally get it together consistently … Irmo fell below the .500 mark by going 1-4 at the Azalea Invitational Tournament last week in Summerville … This week will tell the tale – whether the Jackets are going up or staying put behind the top three teams. Irmo hosts North Augusta on Tuesday, travels to play Aiken on Wednesday and hosts Lexington on Thursday. A sweep gives the Yellow Jackets a fighting chance at earning a home game in the first round of the state playoffs.
