Unbeaten DF girls roll to first Hungry Howie's tournament title

Unbeaten, second-ranked Dutch Fork claimed the first Hungry Howie’s girls soccer tournament championship last weekend at Irmo.

The Silver Foxes went 4-0 at the inaugural event, including a 2-1 win over fourth-ranked T.L. Hanna in Sunday at W.C. Hawkins Stadium. Stephanie Gauthier, who accounted for six of the 10 DF goals in the tourney, tallied twice in the title bout, posting the winner with 15 minutes remaining in the match. TLH cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal five minutes later, but the Silver Foxes controlled the play from there.

“It was a long weekend and the girls were exhausted by the end, but we played well and it was a good experience playing against some teams from outside our area,” said DF coach Hayne Painter.

Gauthier had two goals and Sarah Haacker one in the Foxes’ impressive 3-1 win over ninth-ranked Ridge View in the opener on Friday. Dutch Fork advanced to the championship match with Saturday wins over Class 3A fourth-ranked Riverside and archrival Irmo. Haacker scored twice while Gauthier and Carolina Duncan also found the range in the 4-0 win vs. Riverside. Gauthier’s goal in the 21st minutes was the lone score against the ninth-ranked Yellow Jackets.

Gauthier has been red hot of late, scoring nine goals in five matches to take over the team scoring lead with 12.

Duncan recorded her second hat trick of the season against Orangeburg-Wilkinson in the Silver Foxes 7-2 win over the Bruins in their return to Region 5-4A matters on Tuesday.

Entering tonight’s region outing at North Augusta, Dutch Fork stands at 14-0 overall, 7-0 in the region at the midway point of the conference campaign.

“We’re playing pretty well and with some confidence, but we have to guard against being overconfident,” said Painter. “We can’t lose track of our ultimate goal, which is to make a run at winning a state championship.”
