It’s been quite a week for the Blythewood softball team.
The Bengals cracked the Top 10 in Class 4A coaches poll for the first time (tied for 10th with Summerville), but the major item is still to come. Friday’s Senior Night game against Rock Hill provides Bucky Ware’s team (16-5, 8-0) the opportunity to wrap up the Region 4-4A championship in its first season at the highest level of competition in the state, no matter the outcome of Monday’s region finale at Lancaster.
A Bengals win over Rock Hill on Friday would have the added bonus of clinching a playoff spot for neighboring Ridge View – the team Ware coached before moving over to Blythewood to start the program from scratch in 2006.
Blythewood opened the week with a 12-6 non-region win over Dutch Fork to complete a season sweep of the Silver Foxes, and followed that with an 11-0 region rout of South Pointe on Tuesday.
Kelly Owens tossed a six-inning perfect game for her sixth win in the circle. Tiffany Harris and Hillary Stewart slugged home runs in the rout, and Harris added two more hits and two more RBIs to her haul.
If Blythewood beats Rock Hill as expected, the region’s four playoffs seeds will be set. Lancaster will be No. 2, followed by Spring Valley at No. 3 and Ridge View at No. 4.
