Cardinals, Skyhawks prevail in boys soccer playoff openers

Top-ranked Cardinal Newman and No. 3 Hammond splashed to soggy home-pitch wins on Monday in the first round of the SCISA Class 3A boys soccer playoffs.

The Cardinals (18-3-1) dumped Porter-Gaud 4-1 at George Watson Field for its 15th straight win. Nick O’Rourke and Mike Beaudoin took care of all the CN scoring with two goals apiece.

Beaudoin two scores allowed him to take over the team lead from Gabe Roldan with 15. O’Rourke, meanwhile, upped his season count to 11 goals. Beaudoin, a senior forward, and Roldan, a senior midfielder share the overall scoring lead with 34 points, followed by Thomas Winstead (28) and O’Rourke (25).

Cardinal Newman moves on to the semifinals and a home match on Wednesday against Wilson Hall. The Barons’ were leading St. Joseph’s 2-0 on Monday when the first-round match was halted by a thunderstorm. SCISA today declared the match official.

Hammond (17-4) breezed by visiting Florence Christian 3-0 on Monday. Vincent Hudon, Braeden Troyer and Matthew McClam tallied the Skyhawks goals and keeper Jack Felmly rang up his eight shutout.

Hammond is gearing up for a rematch with four-time defending state champion Pinewood Prep on Thursday. The Skyhawks pulled off a 2-1 shootout win over the imperious Panthers in Summerville on April 20. Pinewood’s first-round home match vs. Ben Lippen has been pushed back to Wednesday.
