The waiting game was finally over for Lugoff-Elgin on Saturday, and so was the Demons’ dream of winning the Class 3A state baseball championship.
After three days of rain delays, Greer beat visiting L-E 8-3 in the District III championship game. The Yellow Jackets (19-5) open the Upper State championship tournament Monday against Seneca. The Demons, who entered the playoffs ranked No. 1, finished with a 19-6 record.
L-E had a 3-2 lead in the second inning, but that was all it would muster against Greer starter Jeff Witt, who allowed just one earned run in six innings of work in his first outing since mid-April. Witt was also big at the plate. His two-run double in the bottom of the second put the Yellow Jackets ahead for good, and he chipped in a two-run single in a four-run burst in the sixth that essentially settled the issue.
