Four Midlands teams face must-win situations tonight

Four Midlands teams will try to stay alive in the state baseball and softball playoggs tonight. A win means a shot at reaching the state championship series; a loss means the end of the line in 2009.

In baseball, defending Class 3A champion travels to St. James in the Lower State loser’s bracket final. The winner plays at Camden on Friday night for the Lower State championship.

Mid-Carolina faces its third game in three days tonight at home against Walhalla in the 2A Upper State loser’s bracket final. The Rebels opened the US tournament with a 4-3 win over Central on Monday as Krishawn Holley dominated with an 18-strikeout performance on the hill and Will Bedenbaugh headlined the attack with a gramd slam. M-C lost 4-3 to host Chesnee on Tuesday. Both teams hit two home runs in the game. The difference was all of Chesnee’s runs came on the round-trippers against C.J. Edwards, including a game-winning, three-run blast by Taylor Waldrop. M-C’s circuit shots against Eagles ace lefty Brandon Henderson were solos by Cody Page and Blake Stuck. Holley had the other Rebels RBI. Walhalla earned the right to face the Rebs by beating Central 3-0 on Tuesday.

In softball, White Knoll travels to Stratford in the 4A Lower State bracket with both teams hoping for another crack at South Florence. SF opened the LS tournament with a 7-1 win at White Knoll and advanced to the finals by beating Stratford at Freedom Florence on Monday.

Gilbert, fresh from an 11-2 loss to Crescent, hosts Broome the 2A Upper State tournament. The Centurions bounced back from a tough 2-0 loss to Crescent in the opening round to eliminated Abbeville, 2-1, on Monday. Broome pitcher Shelby Spencer has been sensational in the playoffs. Spencer allowed only one hit and two base runners in the opener at Crescent and both scored on errors. The Indians winless streak against Crescent continued on Monday, but at least the Tribe scored more than one run for the first time in eight playoff meetings with the Tigers through the years. The winner heads back to Iva and a rematch with Crescent on Friday.
