Mid-Carolina managed only five hits in last night’s Class 2A Upper State baseball tournament elimination game against visiting Walhalla, but the Rebels scored plenty of runs to advance to Friday’s championship round at Chesnee.
In the end, M-C did what it had to do in a 9-5 win that ended the Razorbacks season. The Rebels (21-3) must beat Chesnee twice on Friday to advance to the best-of-three state championship next week. The Eagles nipped the Rebs 4-3 on Tuesday.
The Rebels, who were playing in their third game in as many days, delivered what proved to be a decisive three-run burst with two outs in the third inning when Bryan Cotney stroked a run-scoring single and Tevins Walker followed with a two-run home run that proved to be the game-winning hit.
Cody Page finished with three RBIs for M-C, while Walker and Alex Benenbaugh had two RBIs apiece. Will Bendenbaugh was the winning pitcher, though he gave up six runs and nine hits in 4.2 innings of work.
