Heathwood Hall hires two with USC connections

Heathwood Hall has hired a pair of coaches with USC ties, the Columbia private school announced Monday.

Former Gamecocks volleyball coach Nancy Somera will take over the Highlanders' girls volleyball program, while ex-USC basketball player Brionna Dickerson will return to her alma mater as an assistant with the girls team.

Dickerson will work with new girls coach John O'Cain, previously the school's junior varsity boys basketball coach. In addition, the school announced it has hired veteran instructor Dick Anderson as its girls tennis coach. Somera, who played at Southern Cal, was the Gamecocks' coach for two seasons before her husband, Ben Somera, succeeded her in 2007.

“We’re excited and pleased that Coach Somera has joined Heathwood Hall’s athletics program,” Heathwood athletics director Jeff Whalen said in a release. “She looks forward to working with players at all levels and we’re looking forward to this new era in our girls’ volleyball program.”

Dickerson, who scored 3,400 points at Heathwood, averaged 11.6 points and was a 34.9 percent 3-point shooter as a two-year starter for the Gamecocks.
