Four Midlands teams still standing in soccer playoffs

Only four Midlands soccer teams are still standing in the state soccer playoffs, and that number will be whittled down by at least a factor of one by the close of action tonight.

In Class 3A, two third-round boys matches washed out by rain on Saturday will take place tonight – Airport at Brookland-Cayce at The Cage in the Lower State semifinals and No. 1 Eastside at Chapin in the Upper State semifinals. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Unbeaten, second-ranked Irmo thumped visiting West Ashley 5-1 at W.C. Hawkins Stadium to advance to the Class 4A Lower State championship match on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets (22-0) hit the road for the Lowcountry to play fourth-ranked Wando (21-4-1).

The rest of the Midlands third-round cast was expelled late last week.

The Lexington girls dropped a tough 1-0 decision to two-time defending state champion Wando Friday on the road in the third round of the Class 4A playoffs. Chapin suffered a similar 1-0 fate against Eastside in 3A. Swansea’s surprising playoff run in 3A was ended in Myrtle Beach, 4-0.

Batesburg-Leesville and Gilbert were eliminated in the third round of the 2A boys playoffs on Saturday. The Panthers were felled 3-1 at home by Walhalla, while the Indians suffered a 3-1 defeat in Greenwood at the hands of Emerald.
