Recap: Chapin softball

Chapin produced a compelling softball story in 2009 under first-year coach Jason Jolley. The young Eagles put together a fine 21-4 record, won the Region 4-3A pennant with a perfect 10-0 conference mark and advance to the Elite Eight in the playoffs by winning a district championship.

“We exceeded all expectations outside of the program but our goals were met for the year,” said Jolly. “Our primary goal was to compete for a region title and play at home in the playoffs. By winning all 10 region games and having a good non-conference record, we put together an 18-2 regular season, by far more than we could have ever asked for. Chapin had not made the playoffs in nine seasons so this year went a long ways for setting the standard for years to come. Making it to the final four in the upper state was a great accomplishment for a group of players who had never made the playoffs before.”

Brittany Barr, Taylor Morgan, Whitley Martin, Samantha Boland, Lauren Barton were voted to the all-region team and Jolley was named the region coach of the year.

Barr and Morgan also received all-state recognition.

With seven starters returning, the Eagles should be in line for another excellent campaign in 2010.

“With five all- Region players back, including two all-state pitchers, we’ll be looking to repeat as region champions and take the next step in the playoffs by competing for a state title,” said Jolley. “The players do not want to settle for anything less. The bats will have to come alive down the stretch next season. We lost two heartbreakers in the Upper State tournament by a combined score of 3-0. The outlook is bright with a great group of junior varsity players ready to mix in with an excellent group of returning varsity players.”

The only departing senior starters are center fielder Josie Hayes and first baseman Chelsea Frick.

Savannah Frick and Jenna Taylor are the two other varsity starters expected to return in 2010.
