Batesburg-Leesville finished the 2009 baseball season with an 18-8 record, had a third-place finish in Region 3-2A behind Mid-Carolina and Gilbert and advanced to the finals of the District I playoff finals – pushing No. 1 Abbeville to the limit before being eliminated.
It was an under-the-radar, Top 10 performance by the Panthers.
“The season went like I expected,” said Panthers coach Tommy Williams. “We had no senior starters this year, so 2010 should be a good year for us. Most of the players coming back will be starting for the third year on varsity.”
The top returning hands are Scott Price, D.J. Osby, K.J. Johnson and Jace Grandy – B-L’s all-region pick this season.
Price put together an outstanding season at the plate and on the hill. He led the team with a .491 batting average and a 1.325 OPS, featuring 24 runs, 17 RBIs, nine doubles and 16 walks, and was 2-1 with two saves and a 2.02 ERA in pitching mode. Osby hit .342 with 20 runs and 17 RBIs. Johnson sported a .478 batting average and a 1.073 OPS with 22 runs and 14 steals. Grandy hit .397 with a team-high 26 RBIs, and was 6-2 with a 3.89 ERA as a regular in the rotation.
The rest of the expected returning cast should feature Demetrius Robinson (.387, 17 runs, 14 RBIs), Andrew Gettys (.287, 14 runs, 14 RBIs), Cooper Gunter (15 RBIs), Will Berry and Cody Sanders (5-2, 3.49 ERA, 69 strikeouts in 45 innings).
