Lexington ended Chapin’s recent domination by winning the Lexington County cross country championship meet on Wednesday.
The Wildcats had a winning score of 45 points, 14 ahead of runner-up Irmo. Defending champion Chapin was third with 71 points.
Senior veterans Drew Harris and Will Belue, who earned all-county recognition by finishing fourth and sixth individually, led the winning Lexington effort. Harris clocked in at 16:48, Belue at 17:05. Returning varsity starters Alex Haulbrook (8th, 17:11) and Jay Lloyd 10th, 17:28) also cracked the Top 10. Erik Wendt (17th, 18:11) rounded out the Wildcats scoring lineup.
Lexington is looking to improve upon last’s season’s 17th-place showing at the 4A state finals. So far, so good. The Wildcats beat out seventh-ranked Irmo and No. 10 Dutch Fork at the county event.
Dutch Fork’s Roland Hakes was the individual champion, posting a winning time of 16:41. Irmo’s Aaron Sirko (2nd, 16:43), Chapin’s Carson Barnes (3rd, 16:44), Irmo’s Andrew Jordan (5th, 16:52) and Airport’s Jamie Sires (7th, 17:11) rounded out the all-county team.
