Preview: Chapin at Newberry

Chapin notes: The Eagles overcame a 14-0 first-quarter deficit and four turnovers last week to beat Gilbert and improve to 3-0 under new coach Scott Earley … Chapin mounted a game-winning, 81-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter. The decisive moved concluded with a 6-yard scoring pass from Michael Weimer to Victor Frick with less than five minutes remaining. Weimer, who threw three interceptions, finished with respectable passing numbers – 19-for-35 for 215 yards and two TDs. Joe Sanga ran for 118 yards and one score … For the season, Weimer is 39-for-70 passing for 646 yards and eight touchdowns. Sanga has 234 yards rushing on just 28 carries (8.4 average). Frick is the leading receiver with 15 catches for 212 yards and five TDs … Chapin is off to its best start since launching the 2004 campaign with five wins in a row.

Newberry notes: The Bulldogs, who missed the state playoff cut a year ago for the first time since dropping down to 2A in 2004, have rebounded from a 28-0 season opening loss to neighboring rival Clinton by taming Broome (35-14) and Fairfield Central (36-22) ... Marcus McMorris scored two touchdowns – a 1-yard run in the third quarter followed shortly by a 35-yard interception return … In all, Newberry posted 292 offensive yards, 242 coming on the ground. Kevis was the nominal leader of the balanced running attack with 66 yards on 13 carries … NHS is 2-0 with Tyler Bishop at quarterback … Newberry had 421 offensive yards vs. Broome.

Series history: Chapin win the first two encounters with the Bulldogs, but Newberry has since dominated with 11 straight wins over the Eagles.
