Irmo's dynamic duo dominates Spring Valley

Spring Valley High had no answers for Irmo's Mustafa Greene and David Frazier on Friday night at Harry Parone Stadium.

Greene rushed 23 times for 173 yards and three touchdowns, while Frazier caught two touchdown passes and returned a punt 59 yards for a score as the Yellow Jackets rolled past the Vikings 49-15.

"Both of them are special athletes, and they put on a show in the first half," Irmo coach Bob Hanna said. "I'm glad they play for us. They worked hard to get where they're at."

Irmo (3-1) jumped to a 21-0 lead by the halfway point of the second quarter behind Greene's 35-yard touchdown scamper - on his third carry - and quarterback David Olson's two touchdown passes to Frazier.

Spring Valley (2-2) finally punched through into Irmo territory when quarterback Dwayne Duckett came in for starter Austin Hill.

Duckett led the Vikings on a 12-play, 79-yard scoring drive, which Markese Mason capped with a 4-yard TD run to make it 21-7 Irmo with 6:13 left in the first half.

"No. 5 (Duckett) is a good player," Hanna said. "He does a good job. He's hard to get your hands on."

After Spring Valley forced the Yellow Jackets' first punt, the Vikings seem poised for a comeback. But on the ensuing, Irmo stripped the ball from Mason at midfield. That set up Greene's 49-yard score at the 3:21 mark.

"We thought if we could get it to 21-14, we might get back in the ballgame," Spring Valley coach Quay Farr said. "But we shot ourselves in the foot. I'm gonna be honest. They (the Yellow Jackets) are a good football team, and that first quarter just absolutely killed us."

Two minutes later, Frazier took a Spring Valley punt at his 41-yard line and raced past defenders on the right sideline to give the Yellow Jackets a 35-7 advantage at the half.

Spring Valley's muffed punt early in the third quarter led to Greene's third score, a 1-yard dive.

Dawan Scott broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to make it 49-7 Irmo. Spring Valley's Randall Lawyer closed the scoring with a 6-yard run with 5:10 left.

"We played good, we played bad, we played good, we played bad," Farr said. "We're struggling offensively with staying consistent, but our running backs run hard. But we just never got into the ballgame tonight."
