2009 volleyball team-by-team previews

Hammond

Coach: Andy Edgren

Last season: 10-5, 7-3

Returning starters: Sophia Chen, Amber Bennett, Kaki Smith, Elaine Epting.

Outlook: The Skyhawks finished second in their region and fifth in the state last season. Their consistant offense and strong defense should lead Hammond to a solid season despite losing four starters.

Spring Valley

Coach: Deanna Rudnik

Last season: 14-20

Returning starters: Cristina Nazerio, Savonia Bryan, Wanda Owoh, Kynyata Simmons, Ashley Williams.

Outlook: After losing in the first round of the playoffs last year, Coach Rudnik looks for the Vikings' playing experience and positive attitude to lead her young team to a winning season.

Chapin

Coach: Mary Jo Jenny

Last season: Won Region 4-3A with a 10-0 record

Returning starters: Shelby Todd, SaraRice, Sara Jefferson.

Outlook: The Eagles finished first in their region last year, but, with only three returning starters, Chapin will rely on offensive power and strong serves to dominate region play again this season.

Pelion

Coach: Roger Wahl

Last season: Went 4-6 in Region 5-2A

Returning starters: Kayla Dooley, Tiffany Osmanski, Brittany Osmanski.

Outlook: Wahl's Panthers played together on the JV team, and he looks to help them overcome their varsity inexperience this season.

Heathwood Hall

Coach: Nancy Somera

Last season: 2-15, 2-8

Returning starters: Carson Lanceford, Eliza Nixon.

Outlook: With an eighth grader, three freshman starters and former USC coach Somera's 18 years of coaching experience, the Highlanders have plenty of room for growth and improvements this season.

Airport

Coach: Jessica Kerbs

Last season: 11-6, 6-4

Returning starters: Taniqua Canzater, Whitney Brown, Denise Bonnette, Danielle Sox.

Outlook: Coach Kerb's mature Eagles team, consisting of three seniors and 10 juniors , hopes to return to the playoffs this season after losing in the first round to Bluffton last year.

Cardinal Newman

Coach: Bob Watson

Last season: 13-9, 7-3

Returning starters: Erin Zander, Denise Jeanmougin, Nazley Wilson, Alex Watson, Paige Bennett, Rachel Bruning, Meredith Mann.

Outlook: The Cardinals have seven returning starters. Captain Alex Watson and senior Denise Jeanmougin were all-region and all-state players last year.

Dutch Fork

Coach: Cindy Robarge-Esposito

Last season: Placed fourth in Region 5-4A, lost in first round of playoffs.

Returning starters: Kinda Bailey, Raveen Goleton, Ty LaPorte, Becky Boyle, AbbeyWeldon, Alex Green.

Outlook: This is Coach Esposito's first season with the Silver Foxes.
