Augusta Christian notes: The Lions are a different team in 2009, starting with first-year coach Keith Walton who took over the job after Bruce Lane left to coach in Texas. The lineup is almost completely new, as well … AC is so committed to youth that freshmen Tyler Robinson (quarterback) and Sean Sweeting (middle linebacker) are filling the key positions on offense and defense … Still, the Lions are off to a 3-1 start and fresh from a 21-14 road win last week at Laurence Manning. AC had a 14-0 lead, and responded with a game-winning scoring drive in the fourth quarter after the previously unbeaten Swampcats stormed back to tie the score early in the final frame … The Lions defense came up with five takeaways, four of them being interceptions.
Ben Lippen notes: After losing 24-10 to Heathwood Hall last week at home, the Falcons season could well hinge on the next two weeks and SCISA Region 1-3A games against Augusta Christian and Hammond. Simply put, the Falcons need a bounce-back win this week to stay in contention for at least a share of the region title and a home date in the first round of the SCISA playoffs … Last week, BL had two major issues vs. Heathwood Hall. The offense could not deal with the blitzing of linebackers Walker Sojourner and Morgan Whalen, and the defense had no answer for Highlanders quarterback Mac Whalen, who scored all three HH touchdowns and accounted for all but 21 of the team’s 304 offensive yards … The Falcons finished with just 43 yards rushing and quarterback Joey Carter was pressured into a 10-for-30 passing performance and two interceptions … Carter is now 70-for-140 passing for 1,079 yards and nine touchdowns, while rushing for 179 yards and three TDs. William Fant is the top rusher with 210 yards on 51 carries. The top receivers are Taylor Wilson (26 catches, 341 yards, three TDs), Ross Fleming (17-279-3) and Will Roseborough (12-199-0) … The defensive leaders are Gabe Smith (49 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 FG block), Zack Perry (30 tackles, 8 sacks), Sammy Joe White (20 tackles, 5 sacks), John Nahlen (26 tackles, 6 sacks) and Andre Hennie (17 tackles, 2 interceptions).
Series history: The Falcons beat the Lions for the first time a year ago, pulling out a 48-41 overtime thriller in Georgia. AC won the first four meetings of the teams by an average winning margin of 21.5 points.
