Fantastic five: More top Midlands football games

WHERE: W.C. Hawkins Stadium

WHEN: 7:30 tonight

THE SKINNY: Irmo continues to feature a diverse offense each week, starting with RB Mustafa Greene and including QB David Olson and WR David Frazier. The Yellow Jackets average 38.3 points per game. Orangeburg-Wilkinson averages more than 25 but is allowing 30.5. That's troubling when facing an offense like Irmo's.

THE PICK: Irmo

WHERE: Richland 2 Stadium, Blythewood

WHEN: 7:30 tonight

THE SKINNY: The Diamond Hornets face a difficult task as they attempt to end a three-game losing streak. Their defense, led by Marvin Smith (56 tackles) and Matthew Smith (42), will be asked to stop Blythewood running back Brandon Wilds (696 yards, nine touchdowns). Another interesting matchup: Bengals defensive back Evan Lanford (four interceptions) trying to add to his total against Lower Richland quarterback John Worthy, who has thrown just two picks this season.

THE PICK: Blythewood

---------------------------------

WHERE: Midland Valley High, Graniteville

WHEN: 7:30 tonight

THE SKINNY: Batesburg-Leesville will put its three-game winning streak and Class 2A ranking on the line against a tough Class 3A foe. Midland Valley handed Class 2A power Silver Bluff its first loss last week. The Panthers, who beat Keenan last week, will look for another big game from quarterback KJ Johnson and running back Elliot Jeffcoat.

THE PICK: Midland Valley

---------------------------------

WHERE: Harry Parone Stadium

WHEN: 7:30 tonight

THE SKINNY: Spring Valley's young defense faces a stern test for the second week in a row. After losing 49-15 to Irmo last week, the Vikings face a Hartsville team averaging 34.8 points a game. The Red Foxes' defense, though, was porous last week in a 42-20 loss to Myrtle Beach that knocked Hartsville out the Class 4A rankings. Still, it will take a shootout for Spring Valley to win.

THE PICK: Hartsville

---------------------------------

WHERE: Allendale-Fairfax High

WHEN: 7:30 tonight

THE SKINNY: A battle between two of Class A's top teams is also a key region 5 game. Allendale-Fairfax, averaging 40 points a game, features a more potent offense than the Saints do. But Calhoun County, which owns a victory against Class 3A Hilton Head, is allowing 8.1 points a game.

THE PICK: Calhoun County
