Preview: Edisto at Pelion

Site: Pelion. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Pelion enters Region 5-2A play this week against 1-4 Edisto with a 3-2 record. The Panthers had the same non-region grade last season, and went 0-5 in the conference to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2002 … Jamaar Pontoon is off to a great start with 806 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on 120 carries. Pelion’s defense standouts are Donald Martin (42 tackles, 2 fumble recoveries), Tyree Gainey (27 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 fumble recovery), Nick Gerity (26 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 interception) and Nick Johnson (33 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 fumble recovery, 1 safety) … The Panthers are +5 in the takeaway-giveaway category … Pontoon had two scoring runs and quarterback Wesley Camp had one scoring pass and two TD runs in last week’s 32-14 romp vs. Eau Claire … Edisto dropped a 19-14 decision to Lake Marion. The Cougars, who face a tough early schedule with games against 1A power Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Calhoun County and K-K-T, have managed to beat only second-year Branchville during non-region testing.

Series history: Edisto has been a tough foe for the Panthers through the years, winning seven of the eight outings. Pelion’s lone success was a 34-30 thriller during its 11-1 campaign in 2000.
