Fantastic Five: More top Midlands games

Lugoff-Elgin vs. Chapin; Midland Valley vs. Airport; Gilbert vs. Batesburg-Leesville; and more.

Lugoff-Elgin (4-1) vs. Chapin (5-0)

WHERE: Cecil Woolbright Field, Chapin

WHEN: Tonight 7:30

THE SKINNY: Two of the state's top-10 Class 3A teams meet in an important Region 4-3A game. No. 7 Chapin has proven opportunistic under first-year coach Scott Earley. But the Eagles face their toughest challenge yet in the No. 9 Demons, whose lone loss came in overtime to No. 6 Airport. Lugoff-Elgin will be the most athletic team on the field.

THE PICK: Lugoff-Elgin

Midland Valley (4-1) vs. Airport (5-0)

WHERE: Eagle Stadium, Mooneyhan Athletic Complex, West Columbia

WHEN: Tonight 7:30

THE SKINNY: It's the Region 5-3A opening game but it will all but decide the league champion. The No.-6 ranked Eagles and the Mustangs are the only winning teams in the region. Airport's offense is electric, averaging 40 points a game behind W.T. Murden and Ryan Smith. Midland Valley has done it with defense, allowing 15 points a game. That probably won't get it done.

THE PICK: Airport

Gilbert (4-1) vs. Batesburg-Leesville (3-2)

WHERE: Panther Stadium

WHEN: Tonight 7:30

THE SKINNY: The host Panthers come off a bitter 14-8 defeat to Class 3A Midland Valley last week that ended their three-game winning streak. There's little time for the state's 10th-ranked Class 2A team to pout, though, as Region 3-2A play begins against neighborhood rival Gilbert. The Indians are off to an impressive start, having allowed just 67 points. Quarterback Connor Owings has 975 passing yards and 12 touchdowns but seven interceptions. The Panthers have, statiscially, the area's top defensive back in senior Jamal Bryant (six interceptions).

THE PICK: Batesburg-Leesville

Chester (5-0) vs. Fairfield Central (3-2)

WHERE: E.K. McLendon Stadium, Winnsboro

WHEN: Today 8 p.m.

THE SKINNY: The inconsistent Griffins welcome the state's top-ranked Class 3A team to Winnsboro. Chester, state runner-up the past two seasons, appears ready to take home the big trophy. The Cyclones face their first Region 4-3A test against a Fairfield Central team that's won two consescutive games. The Griffins have allowed 10 points in that stretch. But that wasn't against Chester.

THE PICK: Chester

Bamberg-Ehrhardt (5-0, 1-0) vs. Calhoun County (5-0, 2-0)

WHERE: Calhoun County High, Saint Matthews

WHEN: Tonight, 7:30

THE SKINNY: For the second week in a row, the No. 2-ranked Saints face a ranked Class A team in Region 5-A play. Calhoun County topped fifth-ranked Allendale-Fairfax last week and now faces the No. 3-ranked Red Raiders. Calhoun County can virtually end the region race with a win. It has winless region foes Branchville and Demark-Olar yet to play.

THE PICK: Calhoun County
