Volleyball: Blazers even their Region record with win over South Pointe 3-1.
The Ridge View Blazers volleyball team played host to the South Pointe Stallions on Thursday, 10/01/09. It is hard to think of a match so early in Region 4-4A play as a ‘must-win’, but with the Blazers dropping their first 2 matches to Rock Hill and Spring Valley, and with the powerful 6th-ranked Blythewood and 4th-ranked Rock Hill teams looming next week, this match was at least very important if the Blazers wanted to remain in viable playoff contention. The Blazers entered this match coming off a win over the Lancaster Bruins on Tuesday, moving their overall record to 9-5, and their Region record to 1-2.
From start to finish, this 4-set match with the Stallions may have been the most entertaining match of the season so far. Each set was close throughout, with several long defensive rallies, and momentum swings for both teams. There was even some dancing and singing in the stands in the Blazer gymnasium during the 4th set…at least I think it was dancing, I had to ask to be sure.
This was a nice defensive effort from the Blazers, who accumulated 49 total defensive digs of Stallion attacks during the match. Three Ridge View players had double-digit dig totals on the night, senior hitter Hannah Cox (11), sophomore blocker/hitter Diara Lewis (11), and senior setter Megan Woodall (12), helping to slow down the South Pointe offense.

In Set 1, South Pointe jumped out to an early 6-2 lead, but the Blazers rallied to score 9 of the next 12 points to go on top 11-9. For the rest of the set, the two teams traded points, neither team taking more than a 2-point lead, with South Pointe squeaking out the 26-24 win. The Blazers evened things out by winning the 2nd set 25-21, keeping a 3 or 4 point margin for most of the set. In the all-important 3rd set, Ridge View got out to a slim lead at 14-10, and was able to hold off the Stallions late rallies to win the go-ahead set 25-20. Ridge View carried the momentum into Set 4, jumping out to a quick 9-4 lead. South Pointe rallied to get to within 3 points at 9-12 and 18-21, but Ridge View scored the last 4 unanswered points to win the set 25-18.
Some well-timed serve aces late in the 3rd and 4th sets helped the Blazers maintain their leads and keep momentum from the scrappy South Pointe team, who continued to make the Blazers work for points with a nice defensive effort of their own. Megan Woodall had a team-leading 8 serve aces, Diara Lewis had 5, and seniors Raven Ashe and Ronnisha Willis had 4 and 3 aces respectively. Diara Lewis carried much of the offensive punch, collecting 17 kills in the match, with hitter Hannah Cox adding 7, and Megan Woodall putting away 5 from the setter position.
This was a much needed win for the Blazers to move their overall record to 10-5, 2-2 in the Region. Next week’s schedule is Ben Lippen at home on Monday, and away matches with Region foes Blythewood on Tuesday and Rock Hill on Thursday.
