Preview: Camden at Wilson

Site: Memorial Stadium, Florence. Time: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

Camden notes: The Bulldogs parlayed two first-half touchdowns and a superior defensive effort into a 14-0 win over suddenly vulnerable Crestwood last week at Zemp Stadium in the Region 6-3A opener … Now, the real fun begins. Camden’s remaining region schedule features road games at Wilson this week, at Darlington the following week and at Marlboro County in the regular season finale. If the Bulldogs (4-2, 1-0) emerge with their first region title since 2002 they will have done it the old fashion way – they’ll have earned it … SaVonn Wingate ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries to pace the offense. Wingate’s 2-yard run at 0:55 of the first quarter after a fumble recovery by linebacker Zach Neal at the Crestwood 26 gave Camden the lead, and provided all the points need to win, as it turn out. Wingate then capped a seven-play, 80-yard scoring drive with a 28-yard scoring dash with 4:25 left in the second quarter … The Bulldogs actually out-gained Crestwood on the ground, 197 yards to 181 and finished with 252 yards overall … The Bulldogs defense limited the Knights to nine first downs and 173 yards. Camden stopped Crestwood four times on fourth-down plays … The defensive improvement of late has been a team effort, led by the likes of Sterling Green (51 tackles), Neal (50 tackles, 3 TFL), Melquan Lee (48 tackles), Jerel Robinson (40 tackles, 10 TFL, 2 sacks), Sheldon Wright (35 tackles, 10 TFL) and Sjahbar Stewart (20 tackles, 7 TFL, 2 sacks) … Jimmy Neal needs four more wins to become the fourth Camden coach to surpass 100 career wins at the school.

Wilson notes: The Tigers (4-1, 1-0) have won three in a row since being mashed by Hartsville 34-13 in Week 3. Last week, Wilson opened Region 6-3A play withy leisurely 49-14 win at Lakewood … Adray Montgomery had 136 yards and one touchdown on just 11 carries last week, quarterback James Smith, subbing for injured starter Maleik McCall, had 107 yards passing and two scoring throws … McCall, who shared QB duty as a sophomore during the 2007 state championship campaign, is 48-for-81 for 774 yards and seven TDs. Montgomery is a viable running threat with 454 yards and nine TDs on 67 carries. The top receiver is Jordan Kelly, who has 21 catches for 329 yards and three scores. The big-play man on defense, when healthy, is Decar Brown who has six sacks and two fumble recoveries.

Series history: The Bulldogs have won four of the six previous meetings with the Tigers, but Wilson thrashed Camden 40-7 last season when it was on probation and ineligible for region and state championships after it claimed Class 3A honors in 2007.
