RNE notes: After getting off to an 0-4 start, the Cavaliers have gone 2-0 in Region 5-4A play. It hasn’t been easy. RNE needed a last-minute kickoff return touchdown to get by White Knoll in the region opener. Last week, the Cavs needed a 15-yard touchdown run by quarterback Kersean Wilson with 1:04 remaining to get past Lexington 51-49 in a wild offensive shootout … Wilson had a sensational performance, running for 158 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries, while going 11-for-16 for 142 yards and one TD in the passing game … In a game that saw both teams roll for more than 500 yards, it took a rare play on defense to make it official for RNE. The Cavaliers defense forced a fumble and recovered at the RNE 28-yard line for 10 seconds to go … Wilson now has 449 yards and 10 TDs by land, 647 yards and seven scoring passes by air. Darius Paulk has a slight edge over the senior quarterback in rushing – 450 yards on 63 carries.
Aiken notes: Like RNE, Aiken entered the 2009 season facing a big rebuilding project. Like the Cavaliers, the Green Hornets currently stand at 2-4. The difference is Aiken won its first two games of the season has since fallen into a four-game losing streak. Simply put, the Hornet need a win this week to keep their playoff hopes alive … The Hornets are mired in a defensive funk, allowing an average of 50 points a game in their four losses … Things did go all that well offensively last week in a 41-10 loss at Irmo. The Hornets managed just 179 yards on the attack. Quarterback Billy Vickers had 75 yards rushing, 50 passing.
Series history: The Cavaliers defeated the Green Hornets twice in 2008 – 24-14 during the regular season, 24-7 in the first round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs. RNE is 5-1 all-time vs. Aiken.
