Newberry notes: The Capitals improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Region 4-2A with a 39-12 win over Eau Claire last week. Columbia opened the region campaign with a win over Lee Central by the same score ... Quarterback Kevin Davis ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns vs. EC, and was 13-for-18 passing for 161 yards and two scores. DeErik Bradley had 143 yards rushing and one TD on 15 carries. McArtha Thompson six tackles and an interception return for a TD on defense, caught a scoring pass on offense from his tight end position and handled all of the Capitals kicking chores. Sharperson also a team high seven sacks. Ky Tyler is next with five.
Andrew Jackson notes: The Volunteers (2-5, 1-1) are coming off a 35-14 home loss to Keenan. AJ’s lone touchdown in the game came on a 75-yard kickoff return score by Ryan Miller. The other points came of two Tyler Dinkins field goals … Junior quarterback Darrian Henderson is the Vols most productive offensive player … The loss to Keenan likely assures that AJ will not finish above .500 for the 12th year in a row.
Series history: The series has been tight through the years. Columbia has a slight 5-4 overall advantage and a 3-2 edge in region games. AJ managed a 10-6 win over the injury-ravaged Capitals last year at Memorial Stadium.
