North Augusta notes: The Yellow Jackets bounced back from a bitter, last-second loss to Irmo last week, ripping Orangeburg-Wilkinson 41-7 … NA’s main man is quarterback Lorenzo Hammonds, who is a game-breaker by land or air. Hammonds leads the team in rushing with 595 yards and nine touchdowns on 103 carries, and is 97-for-139 passing for 1,402 yards and 19 TDs. Matt Hazel is the most inviting target with 47 catches for 788 yards and 12 scores … The Jackets’ defensive standouts are Montel Hughes (81 tackles, 6 TFL) and defensive back Jaylon Myers (5 interceptions).
Richland NE notes: The Cavaliers, who got off to a 0-4 start this season, improved to 4-0 in Region 5-4A play with a 24-19 win over Dutch Fork. RNE, in fact, can lock up an automatic berth in the Class 4A state playoffs with a win this week over the potent Yellow Jackets … The Cavs saw DF pull within 24-19 with a touchdown at 3:02 of the fourth quarter, but sealed the deal by running out the clock on the ensuing possession. Senior quarterback Kersean Wilson didn’t have a great passing night vs. the Silver Foxes (3-for-8, 31 yards), but did plenty of damage on the ground. Wilson paced RNE’s 299-yard running game with 111 yards and one TD on 25 carries. His 1-yard scoring dive at 5:33 of the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winning score La’Derrick Cohens rang up 72 yards and one TD on his 10 totes.
Series history: The teams will be meeting for just the third time. The Cavaliers won the two previous encounters – 20-14 in last season’s first-ever regular season clash, and 49-32 in a state playoff quarterfinal outing in 2003.
