Review: Heathwood Hall girls tennis

Heathwood Hall’s girls team turned in outstanding performances during the 2009 season under coach Dick Anderson.

The Highlanders finished with a 12-5 overall record and went 9-0 on the way to winning the Region 1-3A championship. HH went 1-1 in the state playoffs, downing Pinewood Prep in the first round before falling to Porter-Gaud in the semifinals.

Senior Lauren Armstrong was the Highlanders leader at No. 1 singles, compiling a 12-5 individual record.

The rest of the singles lineup featured senior Caroline Lough (9-4 at No. 2), sophomore Karson Kocher (11-6 at No. 3), junior Katherine Lough (13-4 at No. 4), freshman Elise McKelvey (9-7 at No. 5) and sophomore Danielle Zurcher (7-7 at No. 6).

Eighth-graders Katie Beach, Emily Dreyer, Madison Mason and Norrie Beach rounded out the varsity team and will challenge for starting jobs next season.

“Overall, we had a great season,” said Anderson.

“Our support from both the staff at Heathwood and our parents was outstanding. We worked and played under no pressure at all. We will lose two seniors this year, but our younger players, both on the varsity and the jayvees, look very promising. It was my honor and privilege to coach such a fine group of young girls.”
